Are You Prepared to Have 10-14 Different Jobs by Age 38?

by Sean on May 25, 2009

Did you know…

…that into the future people can expect to have 10 to 14 different jobs by the time they are 38?  For the baby boomers and generations preceding them, this statistic appears irresponsible. For the generations following the boomers, changing jobs frequently is more and more accurate.

What’s even more interesting is that this statistic is by individual choice. The young professionals have different priorities than the generations before them. Company loyalty and loyalty to the employee have been outdated since the VCR.

Today, the priorities include activities outside of work as much as at work. Do you offer flex time? Is there the ability to telecommute? Does your organization have a social conscious and support community involvement? What kinds of professional development programs does your company offer?

All of these factors are as important as salary, retirement plan, etc. And, if a current position does not meet the full gambit of needs, this demographic won’t think twice about changing jobs to seek out what they want.

In addition, this generation and those that come after, will be less tolerable and patient than the ones before. This, too, will lead to an increase in changing jobs frequency.

Speaking of generational differences, location may be the most glaring distinction. By and large, you can easily think of a community where people have lived there for a long period of time. Staying in one place and raising a family was customary. Now, you will find increased relocating due to employment.

With the world being flat, and the ability to work from anywhere as long as you are connected to the internet, there is an increased desire to move to geographical areas where you can pursue your hobbies and passions, while advancing your career.

It used to be that changing jobs had a negative stigma attached to it. Slowly, these attitudes are shifting to a more enlightened perspective. Job changing should mean adding to your skill set and being able to provide additional value to your employment opportunity.
