Employment Ideas Worth Considering Prior to Changing Careers

by Sean on March 15, 2010

My extensive experience in the area of changing job led me to great success with what I’m doing now to.   But, this outcome is not always the case. Let me share with you a few employment ideas to help you make a smoother and more valuable transition.

  1. Consider the market.  Is there a demand for your intended position or intended use of your skill set? In some parts of the country, certain industries are flat, or worse, non-existent. Having a heightened level of interest in pursuing a different career path can be exhilarating, yet can lead to extreme disappointment if there are no opportunities available.  Do your research and talk to those currently in the field to check their pulse for activity and trends.
  2. Is additional education required?  I am always a proponent of education.  However, you must ask appropriate questions regarding the expectations when you complete your program.  Find out what the salary expectations are for your intended position when you graduate.  Gather information on how many others will be hitting the job market and the forecasted demand for your skill set/program knowledge.  These employment ideas are not intended to dissuade you.  They are to help form realistic expectations upon graduation.
  3. What are your preferences?  After reading the first two employment ideas, ask yourself the question: “what do I want to be doing?”  The first thing I discuss with new clients is their need to identify their preferences.  What do they want to do?  Where do they see themselves being successful?  What do they see themselves doing that will put a smile on their face and get them excited about going to work everyday?  Each of us has a specific skill set.  We all respond differently to situations.  What situations create the best environment for you?

These employment ideas are designed to help you identify the best steps in moving forward.  Too often we tend to feel as if we have no “out” or, that we are completely stuck.  I can tell you, options abound!  Just consider options with open eyes and after having done some soul searching.  If you are serious about changing careers, look at this as an opportunity for awakening. You have plodded through and have survived to this point of your life.  You have identified what aspects of your career you have not enjoyed, along with those aspects you have enjoyed. It is now time to use your resources to chart a new course.  There are plenty of employment ideas and resources on my website.  Or, if you are interested in having a specific conversation, let’s talk.
