Employment Ideas for Changing Careers

by Sean on March 24, 2010

Are you bored in your job?  Are you considering the prospect of changing careers?  I have had quite a bit of experience, which has led me to what I’m doing now to great success. Let me share with you a few employment ideas to help you with the transition.

  1. Avoid changing for the sake of changing.  Depending on your profession or position, you may find yourself in a state of complacency.  You begin to daydream of what it would be like somewhere else.  Yet, unless you know what you are looking for, you may end up trading one complacent position for another.  Or worse, trading a position of comfort for a job that resembles something only Dante could have envisioned.
  2. Changing just because you want out of your current job is not healthy, yet sometimes required. Admittedly, we tend to focus on the aspects we do not like about our current position.  Maybe it’s the person we work for.  Or, the office politics create an unfair work environment. Sometimes, we have to tolerate the manipulative coworker. Or, additional responsibilities and pressures have been applied, yet additional compensation or appreciation expected has been neglected.  One of the employment ideas for this situation is to have an exit strategy to prevent you from making an emotional decision.  Plan ahead!
  3. In planning ahead, what are your preferences?  After reading the first two employment ideas, ask yourself the question: “what do I need to be doing?”  The first thing I discuss when talking with a new/prospective client is identifying their preferences.  Each of us has a specific skill set.  Each of us responds better to certain situations.  What are these situations for you?
    • What would you prefer to do?
    • Where do you see yourself being successful?
    • What do you see yourself doing that will put a smile on your face and get you excited about going to work everyday?

These employment ideas are designed to help you move forward.  Too often we tend to feel backed into a corner.  I can tell you that you do have options.  Yet, you need to do some soul searching.  If you are serious about changing careers, look at this as an opportunity for awakening. You have plodded through and have survived to this point.  Take the time to identify which aspects of your career you have not enjoyed, along with those have enjoyed. It is now time to use your resources to chart a new course.  There are plenty of employment ideas and resources on my website.  Or, if you are interested in having a conversation, post a comment, or contact me directly.
