Employment Ideas that Sabotage Your Job Search

by Sean on March 9, 2010

Are you sabotaging your job search with bad employment ideas?  You may be and not even realize it.  How long have you been on the job hunt?  Whatever the answer, I’m sure you feel that it has been way too long.  What are you doing to stay focused?  What are you doing to position yourself for the appropriate opportunity?  How are you going about your job search? I think I know and I’d like to help you.

My specialty is helping unemployed professionals get back to work in a position in which they expect to have long term success.  I refer to this as finding, competing for and winning your best fit job.  Job seekers who work with me are successful because we avoid a few specific employment ideas that sabotage your job search.  Let me share a couple of them with you.

Of the worst employment ideas, #1 has to be, “Keeping your options open”.  By being open to anything and everything, you will most likely end up with nothing.  You must choose a direction!  You have to have a purpose! You have to know what you are able and what you are willing to do.  You have to know where you want to take your career for maximum satisfaction.  If you happen to get a job by keeping your options open, the odds are against you that you will enjoy it, which will ultimately lead you back to the unemployment line.

Next of the worst employment ideas: Using your computer exclusively to find a job.  The internet is a fantastic tool, no doubt about it.  Yet, it is just one tool in your arsenal.  What is that sound?  It sounds like something is flushing down the drain.  Ah, it’s your time when sitting at your computer!  Get up, get out and meet people.  Nothing replaces face to face connections.

The last of my short list of worst employment ideas: Continuously re-writing your resume.  Yes, you need to have your resume tailored to each position.  Yes, it has to be relevant and current.  Yes, it has to represent you and you have to be confident and speak well to it.  Yet, too many times, job seekers spend too much time trying to PERFECT it.  There is no such thing as a perfect resume.  The concept does not exist.  If you are comfortable with it, use it.  If you are spending too much time on your resume, you are not allocating appropriate time for your job search.

The road to employment is marred with potholes. They are disguised as competitors, gatekeepers, distractions, lack of mental toughness, etc.  For quicker and more satisfying results, avoid sabotaging yourself with these poor employment ideas.
