Job Hunting Websites

Job hunting websites are the rage. Do a Google search for job hunting websites and you will notice almost 2.5 million hits! This is a staggering figure! I do not need to go into each one here as you can easily do some research on which ones may be best suited for you and the type of position you are looking for. Most job seekers make the fatal mistake of sitting behind their computer screen and firing off resumes to these job boards en masse.

Yes, I said fatal mistake! Of all of the jobs available, any idea what percentage of jobs are filled by job hunting websites? Roughly a meager 3%!!! What that should indicate to you is that very few of the overall number of jobs are filled in this fashion AND these positions are the most hotly contested. Stop wasting your time by applying for these positions!

Utilize methods that will prove more beneficial to you and more effective use of your time. Online job boards can be useful for other worthwhile activities. For example:

  • Most job hunting websites will have interesting articles to help you in your job hunt. What to do on your resume; how to interview more effectively; what information should go on your cover letter; etc. These tips can be very helpful to a job seeker and the information is free.
  • Take a look at the types of jobs available. Do you see a pattern in the industries hiring or skills needed. There are quite a few “work from home” options listed right now. For the most part, these are not legitimate positions, but they indicate to you that many industries are still struggling.

Job hunting websites are helpful in some areas, but do not (generally speaking) provide a vehicle to direct employment. Be wary of how much time you spend online and use the internet for company research and preparation to help you advance yourself through the application process.
