Do I Need Separate Business and Personal Facebook Profiles?

by Sean on November 13, 2009

Don’t even think about it.  As a job seeker, you have enough on your plate without having to manage multiple Facebook pages.  The question is, how do you manage your Facebook contacts?  How do you protect some of your privacy while still having a presence and use this social media vehicle successfully?

Let me introduce you to Andrew Heilman, Chief Missioner at Xpositioning.  Andrew is a leading social media expert and he was kind enough to accept our invitation to share a few tips and methods in utilizing the benefits of Facebook while adding a layer of privacy to your profile.

Sean: Andrew, thanks for being here!

Andrew: Thanks for having me, Sean!

Sean: With over 250 million people on FB, more and more recruiters are utilizing FB to find top talent.  With that in mind, more job seekers are utilizing this method as a valuable tool to connect.  Does a job seeker need two FB profiles…one for professional use and one for personal use?

Andrew: This is a common question and the answer is no.  There are things you can do to protect your privacy while still enjoying the FB benefits of having a single profile.

Sean: Sounds good.  Take us through them.

Andrew: The first thing you want to do is set up lists of your contacts.  If you have contacts that are strictly professional, you can create a list and specifically select those in your contacts to go into this list.   The lists allow you to adjust the privacy settings accordingly to share, or not share, various content with them.

Sean: This is great information!  By setting up your lists and adjusting the privacy settings accordingly, you can protect yourself and still be able to maximize FB.  Do you have any other recommendations for the audience?

Andrew: Sure, Sean.  Whenever you confirm a new FB friend, take the extra second to put them into the appropriate list(s) right away.  The last thing you want to do is procrastinate only to have that picture or post come back to haunt you down the road.

Sean: Good tips!  We appreciate you demonstrating how to set up your lists and privacy settings on the video. Thanks for stopping by Andrew!

Andrew: Good to be here.  Thanks again for having me.
