What Job is Right For Me?

by Sean on January 5, 2010

Asking “what job is right for me?” is a common question asked by most job seekers.  The mistake most often times made is for the job seeker to cast the net out wide expecting to have many opportunities materialize.  This approach can provide disastrous results in leading to increased frustration and decreased job prospects.  You have to be focused and specific in what you are looking for.  Here are a couple of tips that I used when answering the question of what job is right for me.

Tip #1: In thinking of what job is right for me, I had to consider what I wanted to do.  I took into consideration what tasks I enjoyed doing, what kind of environment I wanted to work in, the kind of people/ideas I wanted to surround myself with and who the intended target audience was for the goods/services provided.  Finding the answers to these questions will provide you with clarity in identifying your ideal path.

Tip #2: Now that I had increased my clarity, the next step in the process of what job is right for me was to create a list of industries and companies that typically hire for what I was looking for.  In creating this list, I developed a method to get the questions answered of whether or not they were a good fit for what I was looking for.  For those companies that made the cut, I continued in my due diligence. For those that did not make the cut, they were replaced by other potential prospects.  This practice was continued until I had my top 10 list created and then I aggressively courted these organizations in earning the employment opportunity.

In addressing the question of what job is right for me, I had to go through the exercises of what I wanted to do, which audience I wanted to serve, what my long term career goals were and where I wanted to be.  This proved to be a worthwhile process because the last thing I wanted to do was to become employed in a position where I was not going to be satisfied.  This is a lose/lose proposition for me and for my potential employer.   The best result is to be in a position where I will be satisfied, continue my professional development and lend my talents to an organization that appreciates my contribution.
